HANDLOOM
Reviving our hand loom heritage
There
is a great revival story unfolding in the country’s hand loom industry,
thanks to today’s spirited youngsters who want to go back to their
roots.
The Indian youth are supporting the
cause of hand looms, both offline and online, like never before. They are
not just enriching their wardrobe with the vibrant fabrics of the
country, but they are also supporting sustainable fashion and promoting
Indian culture and heritage in many ways. With movements and social
media communities like Friends of Hand loom, Hand loom Saree Lovers ,
Hand looms and Handmade and I Wear Hand loom Saree paying a glowing
tribute to the magic of handwoven fabrics, the centuries-old industry is
finally getting its due. Well, the craft deserves all the attention it
is getting now and more!
India has an enriching treasure of traditional handlooms and
handicrafts. Modernization and global revolution could not completely
replace the traditional garments and crafts from Indian wardrobe and
these are still the preferred choice especially for occasions such as
weddings, festivals and rituals. On the contrary the increased awareness
towards sustainable clothing and eco-friendly products has resulted in
an appreciation and increased popularity of indigenous crafts and
textiles. The aim of this paper is to examine and evaluate the factors
that have contributed to the emergence of traditional textiles and
handicrafts as a preferred choice of Indian consumers for their apparel,
home and gifting needs.
This paper aims to provide an understanding of
the factors that have helped the Indian textiles and crafts in emerging
as a popular choice among consumer as well as maker community. An
intensive desk research was undertaken to bring forth the various
developments and phenomena that have brought back the focus on Indian
crafts. An exhaustive study of various sources of secondary literature
ranging from research papers, books, dissertations to fashion blogs,
websites, Instagram handles, advertisements and movies was undertaken to
summarize the factors that have increased the consumption of indigenous
crafts and fabrics. The researcher analyzed the text as well as visuals
from various sources to elicit the valuable information. It elucidates
how traditional Indian textiles and handicrafts have transformed into
designer products from being utilitarian items. In doing so the
researcher has also tried to counter the popular worldview of handlooms
and handicrafts being pushed away into sidelines.
